Thunder IIA: dull sound in passive mode

Just got my 1982 Thunder IIA i won in a bankruptcy auction. For more pics see the Members Westones section.

I seem to have volume, active tone and active volume/boost controls. In passive mode the tone pot doesn't work and the sound gets -very- dull. Mmm i don't know if i like the active mode. If all else fails i might take out the active stuff and revert to a simple passive layout. Any ideas?
