Westone Genesis Bass Conversion

Post  genesis 2 on Mon Jan 18, 2010 9:51 pm

Hey guys after not finding pickups or people who want to sell a westone for a somewhat reasonable price LOL,

Ive decided to turn my genesis into and 8 string. Nick Holcomb of Holcomb guitars doing the conversion for me he, is also building a custom bass for me. Pics soon of the conversion. I guess it will be a one of a kind now, decided to put music man copy pickups in it. I also just bought a spector rebop dirt cheap. Ill load up pics of the bass pre 8 string and after. Its a Burgundy genesis with a poplar body. Check out his site if anyone is interested in having a custom bass built, very nice Basses and not ridiculously priced.

Hello Genesis-2 and welcome if I haven't said so already!

Wow! What the heck do you do with eight strings on a bass? I have a sneaky feeling, if my memory serves me correctly, that one of our members here also did an eight string conversion a few years back.
I recall seeing photos and it being mentioned on the old forums so Guy, if you see this post, why not jog our memories for us and let Genesis-2 see what you did!

You never had somebody look at the wiring? I'm sure an 8-string Genesis will be awesome, but why wouldn't you get the wiring checked out first?

Huh?

Have I missed something here Kevin because I don't recall seeing any mention of the wiring?

He had said something was wrong with the pickups and to my knowledge no mention was ever made of making sure the wiring was good. I know my Spectrum bass needs to be rewired, and since the pickups are similar if not identical I suggested he check.

pickups rewiring

Post  genesis 2 on Wed Jan 20, 2010 3:15 am

Yeah the pickups r shot guys we've had 3 separate people test them to no avail. Does anyone know if and EMG 35 or a Seymour Duncan SSB four would fit under the pick up covers, or bettre yet has anyone swapped out their pickups for something else.

Why not have them rewound? They're great pickups.

Pick Ups

Post  genesis 2 on Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:23 am

I may have them rewound however i do own a spector rebop and am having a custom bass being built now from a guy here in RI. I have EMG 35's in the spector and love them also I found a place somewhere that offers the 35's dirt cheap 90 dollars for 2 of them I ordered 3 two for the Genesis and one for my custom, the other pick up in my custom bass is gonna be a Q tuner Neodyninium pickup. If i like the Q tuner i may get another one for my custom and for the Genesis as they both just fit under the cover. Gonna take some pics of the bass and post them soon. Actually how do ya post pics

OK, I'm officially a Neanderthal.
HOW does one play 8 strings? (I can't even get my little head around a 7-string guitar)
Is this like the equivalent to a 12 string guitar?

yup

Post  genesis 2 on Thu Jan 21, 2010 11:20 pm

Its basically like a 4 x 2 where as a 12 string would be a 4 x 3 u could have them individually but i hate thick necks. In fact i just played a fender jazz 5 string and hated the neck way too wide, very smooth but to wide. Look up 8 string or 12 string on the web and they will explain. The regular strings are grouped with a smaller octave string. I use two amps one a regular bass amp and the second a guitar amp for some fuzz and resonance

I have a 12-string 4x3 bass. You treat it like 4-string, it's a very full sound. Mine isn't set up to be plugged into two amps, and I wouldn't want to bother with that anyway.

hey all an update

Post  genesis 2 on Thu Jan 28, 2010 4:42 am

Nick Holcomb at Holcomb Guitars.com now has the Westone in hand. Weve toyed with the idea of keeping the bridge since it has the lockdown and back mount holes for string just not sure how we can alter bridge. Should be about a week till its done. Im putting emg 35 passives in it since my rig has 2 dual 31 band Eq's in it, i dont need active pickups. And the custom bass he's building and spector rebop have the same. Should have some progress pics in a few days. Then you wil all be able to see the first and only (LOL) Westone Genesis Holcomb Guitars 8 String. The Rare just got Rarer.

Post  genesis 2 on Sat Jan 30, 2010 10:31 pm

Well just got set #1 of my emg 35 hz passive pickups an lo and behold they fit perfectly under the pickups covers with no room to spare so thats what we will be using on the bass. Kinda excited i get to keep the pickup covers as part of the bass

I'm glad you can keep it looking stock! It will greatly add to the illusion.
