Hi Barry,

Did you ever get around to metering the PUPs on your DX?

I've acquired some Westone bits and bobs including a pair of PUPs, unmarked on the bottom, that look like yours. Both coils are held on the base pale with 4 screws with a dab of green resin on each one. They came out of a Spectrum but that was all I could get out of the vendor. He couldnt remember the model.

The pole pieces are unlike my other Westones. To raise or lower them, you use a a Philips (or a small blade) screwdriver. Not an allan key. They are both wrapped in typical Westone black cloth tape. They have an earth , red and white wires and are sleeved in brown on one PUP and grey on the other. The grey is the bridge pick up (50mm pole to pole)

I have metered these PUPs using a friends meter and unless Ive cocked up, both more or less come out at about 6.50 kohms as a humbucker and tapped at 3.2K ohms. Seems low to me.

Comments ?

Hi Steve, sorry no.
Originally I couldn't find my old multimeter when I had the DX in pieces, then when I found it:
a) I had no batteries for it;
b) and, when I did get some, it's an older analogue model with way too many settings that I couldn't remember how to use without a tutorial refresher
I've since picked up a small solid state digital one that's easier to use and I've started to document the output of my pups as I do a string change. Unfortunately with 22 guitars it takes awhile to rotate them fast enough to wear out a set! But I'll see what I can do for you.

Hard to say, I've not measured any of my UBC pups. But I have measured at least one MMK45 of mine in a Vantage Avenger at 5.8 and it sounds plenty loud to me! Resistance numbers don't always tell the full story however, they should be looked at as a guide only.

That said, many years ago I did swap out the bridge pup in my ST because it didn't seem to have enough umph for live work!

OK, but from my description, poles, green resin, wires etc, do these describe yours?

Cheers, Steve

Yup!
I pulled the DX out of its case and had a quick look this morning but I was in too much of a rush to do a proper electronic probe. The wires, poles green resin, etc are exactly as you describe above.

For what it's worth I did poke about inside the control cavity but the only consistent reading I could get was 3.13! (Probably of no consequence).

Yup! Finally!
The DX is back out on 'rotation' this week and using my 'QUICK N DIRTY'' test method I took some readings. I thought I'd post 'em here to update this thread:
NECK: 6.30 K 3.20 K split
BRIDGE: 6.25 K 3.17 K split

These low readings together with the plain steel backs and those green drops of glue on the bolts would indicate that these are not true UBC pups as described on the westone.info site. In other words they are the "inferior" version, the same as on my old ST's which I've just replaced with MMK45's. (sigh)

Still, the guitar plays and sounds good. Would sound great with better pups though!
