As promised, here's a good song, with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. These two made some solid music on two collaborative albums released a bunch of years ago (the quality is poor, unfortunately):
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNjgyNjc3MTI=.html
One of my favourites, mentioned here but not showcased much is Rory Gallagher. And here's a selection of stuff - first up is Bullfrog blues:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33Jaodra7AY&feature=player_embedded#
"too much alcohol":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1zsRRt1FWE
"going to my hometown"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYYbK2sDaJ4
"Tatooed Lady", good stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdkuHgSzNhg&feature=player_embedded#
"Shadow Play":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsUKWFkmRu0&feature=related
Do enjoy the stuff with him playing that absolutely pummelled strat. There's not a lot of finish left on that guitar.

I was lucky enough to see Rory in NZ in about 78 or 79 and that gig rates really highly amongst gigs I've been to; he was great and I met him after the show; a very humble, approachable man, sadly missed....
Shadow Play is my fave, along with Shinkicker.

Oddly, I never really rated Iommi - I'm not a big fan of the massive sort of de-tuning he does but once I knew why he did it, I had another listen to the Sabbs and while I'm not their greatest fan, I now have a few on iTunes!! You've gotta be in the right mood for the Sabbs, eh!!!

I saw them in Christchurch NZ in 2007 when Jon Herington was indeed on guitar, and yes, he certainly managed to get the myriad different sounds that Fagan and Becker coaxed out of their myriad of guitarists over the years, eh! The Dan's main claim to fame was finding the right player for the song, and on most of their albums you'll find many guitarists sharing the limelight, but they used, amongst others, off the top of my head, Jeff Baxter, Larry Carlton, Denny Dias, Rick Derringer, Steve Khan and of course, Walter is no slouch either!!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
I was fortunate enough to see Steely Dan twice in Toronto. The first I think was in '94, the second about '04. Took my wife and son to the last one...he was born in the interim and he seemed to dig the groove masters even at age 10. 'Course now at 14 he wouldn't even admit to liking them!
Becker was great but gotta say that Fagin is getting really scary looking on the TV closeups!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Back to Iommi - the Paris concert from 1970 is sublime - I have enjoyed his stuff since I was about 12 or so... Paranoid was my second album (first was the triple disc Yes that my Dad bought for me) - about 5 bucks CDN at the Bay store, downtown Wpg.
I always fought to try to emulate Iommi's tone, achieved with his p90's and that SG of his. Never really totally successful at that. I was also impressed by Black Sabbath's drummer of that era. Their later stuff eg, post Ozzy, also had its moments including gems such as "Children of the Sea", etc.
Ozzy's lyrics rarely went deeper than the surface of the garage floor, but anyway, here are some other examples stuff on the web:
The one and only, the ubiquitous and much misunderstood "Iron Man":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MII3ns2KTBc&feature=related
"Fairies wear boots" (most amazing, most underrated Sabbath tune/tunes - 2 tunes for the price of one):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvuI8d57N9I
"N.I.B." has some good footage of Iommi's handiwork:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiShfBmb-oA&feature=related
"War pigs" - this tune is unique insofar as it has been covered from everyone from Bugs Bunny to Duran Duran to Dead Kennedys.
Well Ok, not that broadly, but many, many covers of this tune exist, including some operatic iterations:

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Personally, my own ultimate inspiration is Ritchie Blackmore (one look at my strat would leave no doubt!). Everything from the early Purple days through Rainbow ('Light in the Black', full volume, close your eyes, and if you are still unmoved there is no hope for you!) and later Purple and Rainbow reformations finally into Blackmores Night. I love the variety in his playing, and the individuality. He doesn't sound like anyone else and no one (even Yngwie!) sounds like him.
Also a huge David Gilmour fan, Steve Hackett, Tony Iommi, Hendrix (of course), Leslie West, Clapton, Peter Green, Lindsay Buckingham, Nick Barrett (Pendragon, check out the new album, Pure. Stunning!), the whole string section from Iron Maiden (Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers) and Jack Bruce (I play bass a lot too). Of the younger crop, Matt Bellamy of Muse stands out from the crowd, and he is so talented I hate him!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
I listened to Tony Iommi being interviewed on Radio 2 (UK) a couple of nights back, "Iron Man" was one of the featured tracks. The chat was one of the funniest things I've ever heard, seems that the band were totally blown away with the whole devil cult thing and found it hard to live up to the hype. Just a bunch of Brummie lads suddenly found themselves jetting round the States trying to live the dream and be really "paranoid" without much idea other than getting senseless drunk.
Iommi's legendary technical ideas were a result of an accident when he lost the tips of the fingers on his right (fretting) hand in the sheet metal plant where he was working days before Sabbath went pro. With no job he began experimenting with thin strings, down-tuning and plastic finger-tips cut from a plastic washing-up liquid bottle glued onto what was left of his fingers!
The rest is history as the say..

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
I would post some links, but as there's so much to choose from, I wouldn't know where to start! I can only recommend one and all to go to youtube and enter Ritchie Blackmore in the search box, then spend several hours going through all of it! Recommended tunes would be Light in the Black, Difficult to Cure, Stargazer, Chid in Time, Highway Star, Burn, Long Live Rock and Roll, All for One, Fires at Midnight, the list is endless! Happy hunting!

This thread had gone quiet but after seeing Joe Bonamassa play the UEA in Norwich (UK) two nights back, I had to add him to the list. Awsome... and that doesn't begin to do justice.
Couple of hours of absolute guitar heaven. UK members... if you can beg, steal or borrow the £s to catch JB on tour here, you won't regret it. From the feedback on the 'net, next time he plays Europe, it will be stadium gigs only. Go now, shove your way to as near to the stage as you can get, pin yer lugs back

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
My guitar hero? hmmm I'd have to say Allan Holdsworth is the all time master ( Andre Segovia Heard Allan before he died and said,"Allan is the best I have ever heard" )
but trying to emulate him is ridiculous and as I have mentioned before using his sound would be so obvious it wouldn't be funny though kinda cool if you can pull it off. There's so many I can never really pin one single guy down as my favourite, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Lee Ritenour, Frank Gambale, Pat Metheny, Uli Jon Roth, Frank Marino,Johnny Winter (Akron Tangiers April 10), I could go on and on. As for a guitar hero I have that I can actually have fun with is Robin Trower, I saw him in 1977 and I have been a fan ever since. I used to play alot of RUSH especially moving pictures & hemispheres.

OH ya... hey I got a video of Tony playing guitar with Jethro Tull.. you can clearly see his fingers (chopped off) and the plastic appendages he used.. he used 'em like slide guitar, very cool.

Excellent I too have seen Steely Dan twice around the same times too and I always thought the early pics of Fagen (like on Midnight Special) was the scariest

Indeed I forgot about Rory.. I have every one of his recordings... from Taste to tons of bootlegs with great sound if anyone ever needs.... I have quite the collection of players complete audio libraries, every album has an mp3 twin too.
