Thunder Jet, the no-good little brother!

Post  munkieNL on Wed Jan 27, 2010 12:15 pm

Got this Thunder Jet in yesterday afternoon. I was in a hurry to catch a train when the doorbell rang. Of course i had to unpack the guitar and inspect it. Then i REALLY had to hurry to catch that train!

Same string retainer as its big brother the Thunder 1. Alder body probably 3 piece although it's hard to tell because of the finish.

Serial number 6010809. So probably made in 1986.

Non original truss rod cover. I'm working on it.

It's not a looker, it probably never was. The matt black finish is a bit cracked here and there, some buckle wear on the back. Neck is straight though, no headcrack, no splits, fretboard and frets are OK. All original and complete except for the truss rod cover. Spectrum like electronics, pickups and knobs.

But there's more than meets the eye. It's light weight and comfortable on the strap. The neck plays almost by itself. It may be the black sheep of the family but it doesn't say "meh" when plugged in Cool It ROARS like a lion on the bridge pickup with a Marshall or metal amp model on my Roland Cube 60. With the coil split it's more versatile than you'd think though. One minus: there's over 1 mm of space between the neck and the neck pocket. Compared to my 200 euro brand new MIC London City Telecaster copy, that's a lot. OTOH the Thunderjet survived almost 25 years of (ab)use and it looks like it could for another 25.

Mounting was no fun and dance, destroyed the one without holes so i had to saw a few mm off the underside of the one with holes to get at least 2 holes lined up. But, from a distance at least, itlooks much better Cool
