Some time during the early 80's I had a thru neck custom electric made for me by Rob Armstrong of Coventry. While we were developing the design, we decided to insert a brass block just below the bridge and tail piece and mount those components through the mahogany top and into the block. Needless to say, the sustain was and still is impressive. If memory serves me correctly, Rob used an oscilloscope and bench tested the sustain at nearly a minute.

From then on, I have always been wary of ...

Anyone come across this one?

A recently acquired Westbury had issues in terms of fret and fingerboard wear which I have addressed. There were deep gouges in the board up to the 5th fret so I was getting a tremelo effect as I pressed down into the holes.

As I say, these issues have been addressed and action and intonation have been set up.

There is, however, a continuing problem in that the G string sounds sharp when fingered at the 4th fret. It is puzzling as it is spot on when played ...

Boy, there's nothing more distracting than having to hold your guitar/bass neck up while playing!

I have now 24 beautiful guitars, half of which are Mats. And at least 3 are "neck heavy" and drive me to distraction.

Awhile back in a post over in the Mats forum I was lamenting the fact that my Vantage VE550, although a beautiful playing guitar, was neck heavy and tended to nose dive when played while standing. Slo-hand offered a nice (read "cheap" solution ) involving ...

I was wanting to determine the radius on one of my guitars recently, but I don't have any gauges. I know I could do the old pins in a stick trick to describe a series of arcs, but couldn't be bothered. And it sounded like work!

So I was looking about for alternatives--cheap alternatives.

I found this handy template which you might find useful. You ...

Hi

Just got a Westbury Deluxe last night and it had obviously been used for some heavy chords over its life. The first 4 frets had some pretty deep furrows, and action could not be adjusted acceptably.

I was toying with the idea of a partial refret when I thought about using solder to fill the furrows before doing a minor redressing and crowning job.

Anyway, I tried it and it seems to work. Frets are level, action is now fully adjusted and the guitar now plays like a dream.

I bought my Westone Prestige 150 back around 1983 and the girl in the shop said 'the technician's not here today but bring it back next Tuesday and he'll set it up'.

Yeah, right, That was what, 27 years ago? and I never returned to the shop (excited as I was with my new purchase.) So now, all these years later, I'm actually doing something about setting it up because, you know how it is; I thought it was about time.

I have recently acquired a Thunder II that's in need of a little TLC.

I need to find some replacement screws for a couple of the bridge saddles - does anyone have any idea where I can find these in the UK? - I've tried several local music stores (Cardiff) without any success.

Any help would be appreciated

I've not used a bendmaster before, but at first glance it appears the adjustment screw is directly under the string and before the saddle. Is this correct? If so, how is one expected to adjust it when string is at full tension?

It's extremely playable, but is in needs of some attention. a lot of it cosmetic wear.

I aim to get a full restoration underway shortly but have a few questions? whats the best way to remove the paint finish, electric sander, paint stripper, hand sanding or does anyone have any alternative methods.

Having had no previous experience with one of these guitars, I am unsure as what is supposed to happen when I flick the Pre-Amp Equaliser Switch. When switched down the guitar works in passive mode and in the up position, the guitar is dead. Is this right? How would I know if the pre-amp was functioning or not for sure?

The build quality of this guitar is extraordinarily good, which encouraged me to buy a Specrum Series II bass today that needs a bit of work. On stripping this Bass, I find that the build quality is nothing like the Thunder I-A. Could anyone enlighten me as to which Westones are built with the quality of the Thunder and which ones are built like an Epiphone?

Thunder I-A restoration

My question is if anyone knows or can check a stock model and tell me if the active electronics ran on 18V or 9V? This guitar is currently wired for 18V (2x9V batteries in series) and it differs a bit from the diagrams I can find online. As far as I know it works as is, I'm not sure if it ...
